Why your website needs an XML sitemap

A sitemap is the list of every page you want search engines to know about, written in a format they read directly. Google and Bing find most pages by following links, and that works well until it doesn't: a page nobody links to, a page buried five clicks deep, or a page you published an hour ago can all sit unnoticed for weeks. A sitemap hands them the full list instead of making them find it.

3. Every page is checked. Each address is requested to confirm it actually answers. Pages that return an error are kept out of the sitemap, so you don't submit dead URLs to Google.
4. You download the file. A single button gives you a valid sitemap.xml, ready to upload to the root of your website.

Since every page has to be checked anyway, the result is shown to you. At the end of the crawl, any address returning a 404 or another error is listed together with the pages that link to it, so you know exactly which files to open and fix.
